Description

The Salamanca Conservatory Jazz Workshop was created in 2004-2005, with the intention of providing students with a creative space for an initiation in jazz languages, as well as for the development of personal musical creativity and improvisational skills in jazz and related  styles.

The diversity of ensembles formed through the years, coordinated by professors Pedro Cañada and Imanol Bageneta, have included many styles of music, ranging from Dixieland, Swing, Be-bop, or Cool Jazz…along with fusions of Latin and Brasilian music, Blues, Funky, Klezmer, contemporary jazz, or arrangements of jazz classics. The repertory has ranged from standard tunes by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Dizzie Gillespie, Charles Mingus, etc.

In 2011, as an extension of the Jazz Workshop, the Conservatory Big Band was created, conducted by Pedro Cañada, and assisted by wind professors Rubén Prades and Roberto Bodí.

Through recent years, the Jazz Workshop has been privileged to bring guest artists to the Conservatory, for collaborations in seminars and master-classes on Improvisation, Arrangements, Orchestration, and Big Band.

Along with student recitals and concerts offered in the Conservatory, the Jazz Workshop regularly organizes performances and jam sessions in “El Savor”, one of Salamanca´s finest local jazz clubs, establishment which has collaborated with the workshop since its foundation.
